Welcome to The Pirates, Smugglers and Legends of Parkgate This tour is focused on the Smugglers of Parkgate and The River Dee. Just like the Pirates of the River Mersey, The River Dee has its own share of Piratical history. Join us as we introduce you to the Myths & Legends of Parkgate.
The Meeting time will be 7pm but if you can arrive for around 6.50 that would make it easier for us to leave on time. We shall be gathering at the site of The Old Quay pub situated on the river front. Children are Free of Charge when accompanied by an Adult.
Meeting Address: The Old Quay, Station Rd, Parkgate, Neston, Wirral CH64 6QJ In the late nineteenth century, an artist named Henry Melling lived at the old Quay House near Parkgate, with a bed-ridden invalid niece, Clara Payne. An elderly lady wearing a red cloak used to sit quietly by the fire and keep her company. The girl did not find the old woman at all alarming, and when she stopped appearing, Clara missed her greatly. Who she was, no one could say, but it is thought that she was an “earthbound spirit. We shall be walking the promenade talking of the myths and legends This has been a popular history day time tour through the summer and now we have added some myths and legends to give it a whole new dimension.
We finish with an optional visit (for an extra charge of £2) to the famous Seven Steps murals in an old seventeenth century house along the Parade. These mysterious murals, which show scenes of tropical islands and sailing ships, were found during renovations and are believed to have originally decorated a waiting room during the days when Parkgate was the main port for Ireland, visited by Daniel Defoe, Handel, Lady Hamilton, and Turner, among others. The tour will generally last up to two hours and there is also the opportunity to ask questions to any of our guides when we head back to The Red Lion, where refreshments are available to purchase. The Hobgoblin is Reccomended.
Your tour guides are local authors and historians Gavin Chappell and Tony Franks-Buckley who are the leading experts on Pirates & Smugglers of the Wirral Peninsula. There is also a Hidden Wirral exclusive as we are give private access to the Seven Steps Murals. (Optional £2 Fee at the end of the tour to owner of Seven Steps Mural) Join us as we introduce you to the Pirates, Smugglers and Legends of Parkgate.
